There are 5 North Cyprus universities which host students from different countries including the UK, Germany, Turkey, CIS states, Jordan, India, Egypt, Pakistan, Sudan and more.
Located in Famagusta, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) is the oldest North Cyprus university. Established in 1979, it offers programs, fully recognized by Council of Higher Education of Turkey, to about 15,000 students from 68 countries. EMU mission is 'to offer an academic environment that attracts and retains a highly qualified and diverse body of students and faculty regardless of their ideological, political, cultural and social background'.
Near East University (NEU) is situated in Lefkosa. Being a private international Northern Cyprus university, it has students from over 30 countries. NEU offers education in such spheres as economics and administrative sciences, engineering, arts and sciences, law, sports, tourism and hotel management, agriculture.
Founded in 1996, Cyprus International University (CIU) is one of the 'youngest' North Cyprus universities in the country. It is located on the way from Lefkosa to Famagusta. Although the university is rather new, it has already signed agreements with several universities across the world. CIU promotes itself as innovative institution 'providing students a centre of excellent international distinction and educational facilities to satisfy the needs of a modern technological society'.
Girne American University (GAU) was founded in 1985 as an independent, non-profit institution of higher education. The university is focused on providing access to an American-based higher education. GAU fosters a variety of instructional approaches, encourages scholarship, and engages in collaborative community services.
Established in 1990 by the Cyprus Science Foundation, European University of Lefke (EUL) aims at providing a broad range of contemporary education through innovative educational model. It is committed to maintain international standards of excellence having achieved its degree programmes to be recognised is such countries as Turkey, Pakistan, the UAE, Oman. Every year EUL expands by attracting more students from all over the world.
ITU-TRNC Education And Research Campuses has started the 2011-2012 academic year in Famagusta Campuses with 3 undergraduate programs which are Marine Engineering, Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. The English Preparatory School education in Famagusta Campuses is still on-going while the basis and the engineering science lectures will be held in 2012-2013 academic year. The infrastructure work is still continuing for the upcoming undergraduate and graduate programs.
